Project Description

Virgin crowned 16th :

Virgin and Child crowned,

XVIth century

Painting on canvas

More recent solid wood frame (XIXth century)

The virgin is represented in a cloudy atmosphere, outside the terrestrial world,

the infant Jesus in her arms.

A pair of colorful putti crown it.

It is surprising to find here the “Coronation of the Virgin” at the same time as a “Virgin and Child”.

The technics is still part of a tradition of the Italian masters of the 13th and 14th century with a tendency for soft colors and pastel tones.

The “monochrome” background subtly reveals a divine halo around Mary.

The infant Jesus, faithful to the Quattrocento pictorial tradition, is depicted in a rather old fashion.

The softness of the faces, the gestures, and especially the hands testify to the painter’s subtlety, which moreover drew all his attention in this work; plastic sobriety actually gives a central importance to the subject: the Marian figure, her coronation and her son.

The whole in excellent condition.

The canvas is made up of two parts (frequent case)
